Non-discrimination
Policy
The International School of Ulaanbaatar
does not discriminate among students on the basis of
race, colour, national or ethnic origin, religion or
gender.
Admissions
Practices and
Policies
Current ISU students receive
priority for enrolment. No enrolment decision can be
made until all application documents are received in
English (see the checklist).
Children with special needs are
admitted on a case-by-case basis and only if the
Director determines that such needs can be met by the
ISU.
All new students shall be entered
for a probationary period of four teaching weeks to
determine whether ISU is able to meet the student’s
educational needs. At the end of the probationary
period, the students’ admission will be confirmed or the
family will be advised that the school is unable to meet
the special needs of the child and admission will be
denied
As per the ISU Articles
of Association, ‘the number of Mongolian students shall
not exceed 40% of the total
enrolment’
Children who enter the
ISU from schools with different academic years i.e.
January to November will generally be placed in the
grade they are currently attending, if entrance is at
the start of the ISU school year. If entrance is midway
through the ISU school year children will generally be
placed in the grade in which they have just completed.
The Director and appropriate teachers will make the
final decisions on grade placement. Refer to policies
III-C and III-D for age of students.
If a child enters ISU after the start
of the school year, there is a 48-hour teacher
notification period from the time the admission
interviews take place, to the child's first day of
school.
Each May, the Board of the ISU,
after receiving a recommendation from the school
administration, will determine how many students can be
accommodated in each grade the following year. School
capacity will be determined using a limit of a minimum
of 10 students per classroom and generally no more than
20 students per classroom, except in preschool and
composite grade classes, where the minimum number of
children is 10 and the maximum number is 20.
Children may be waitlisted if there
is no additional space in the grade level, providing
they meet the criteria required for admission.
Generally, priority will be given to the students whose
completed application was received first by the school.
However, other factors such as the child's ability to
benefit from the school's program may be taken into
consideration.
If the waitlist grows to accommodate
the minimum number of children required for a class, and
if school has sufficient space and teaching resources to
accommodate another classroom, the school may create
another class to accommodate the
waitlist.

Admissions
Policy
Unless there are special
educational, physical needs or other needs which the
school cannot meet, the admission decision is based on
the following criteria:
In the Elementary and the Middle school, the student’s age, academic records, interview results and English proficiency test results if taken, are used in determining grade placement. When necessary, further diagnostic testing may be required to aid in the admissions and placement decisions.
Children will be expected to have English language competency in order to enter the secondary school. This will be decided by the Head of Secondary in reference to the testing results and interview results. Students that do not have enough English to access the IBMYP curriculum will not be successful, and this is something that we avoid for the sake of the child’s learning, or lack thereof. Therefore, Elementary and Middle School-aged children with low competency in English will be admitted to ISU on a limited basis, in such cases ESL (English as a Second Language class) is compulsory. It may also be recommended to take private lessons of English to aid in the learning of middle school students. This will be discussed with the family at time of acceptance to ISU.

Children entering the ISU are
required to have the following vaccinations:
-
DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis,
Tetanus)

-
MMR (Measles, Mumps,
Rubella)
- Hepatitis
